Manifesto

There are times when publishing is, in itself, immediately a political act. Are these times with us now? Those who answer yes are perhaps those who take a chance when told that there are no chances to take. They are not bothered by profit (economic, personal or otherwise) and care radically for the possible. Those who are inclined in this way, who lean in this way (and who possibly dare to be pure inclination) are what Copy Press need. We need your appetite. We need your talents and skills. We need each project (and let a thousand bloom) to form a we that is a commune of talents and skills that comes together for as long as it takes.

Introducing Copy Press

COPY PRESS is a small independent publishing company, based in London. Our first title, Wednesday Afternoon (COPY001), was published at the end of September 2006. Since then we have produced two more titles, and have three more currently in development.

It takes us about a year of stumbling steps to edit and publish each title. We have chosen to go into print and not simply publish online, which is probably stupid and perhaps nostalgic. It takes a stubborn kind of love to spend this long on something so awkward, but the consequence is that we end up with something that is, at least, considered. And that is a virtue or a kind of vanity.

We plan to start to develop one or two other lists. If you are an artist or writer then be aware we are looking for books that we can love and for which we can see no obvious market. If you think you have something that might fit these rather vague criteria than do read our submission guidelines.

COPY003: Revisiting the Bonaventure Hotel

Jaspar Joseph-Lester's book is a photo-essay that describes the life of a building through a range of film stills, photographic images and written citations. Here we wander between references to Fredric Jameson, John Portman and Arnold Schwarzenegger and view the world through different perspectives: vertical, horizontal and rotating. This is a story about the image.
