COPY PRESS is a small independent publishing company in flight from commerce and chasing ideals.
Based in London, our first title, Wednesday Afternoon (COPY001), was published at the end of September 2006. Our second title, Paris (COPY002), is published at the end of May 2008.
It takes us about a year of stumbling steps to edit and publish each title. Free publishing via the web is a great and remarkable freedom. But we have chosen to go into print and not simply publish online, which is probably stupid and perhaps nostalgic. Books are expensive to buy and to make, hard to get distributed and awkward to store. But they are good to hold, and to hold onto, easy to deface and difficult to throw away. They linger and with them stay the ideas that were so carefully put between their covers.
It takes a stubborn kind of love to spend this long on something so awkward, but the consequence is that we end up with something that is, at least, considered. And that is a virtue or a kind of vanity.
We plan to publish several more artists books through 2008 and start to develop one or two other lists. If you are an artist or writer then be aware we are looking for books that we can love and for which we can see no obvious market. If you think you have something that might fit these rather vague criteria than do read our submission guidelines. |

Michael Schwab is curious about trees in Paris. The most unnatural thing about a tree in a city is the place where it is planted. In a city there is a space, and a desire for trees in that space, before a decision is made to plant a tree. A tree in a city does not grow; it is planted.
A mix of prose and drawings, Paris (COPY002) is published at the end of May 2008. |

COPY001: Wednesday Afternoon |

Vit Hopley writes slowly and carefully and has produced these prose pieces that sit proudly, awkwardly, quite outside conventional literary fiction. Vit writes about many things but above all she writes movingly about dying, and watching dying. And standing still.
A mix of prose and photographic narratives, Wednesday Afternoon is COPY001, our first title. It was published at the end of September 2006. Pieces from it are available to read on this site.
You can order the title from Amazon or direct from us. Please see ordering a title for further information. |
